羅莽湖(Loch Lomond)位在蘇格蘭西部，是英國面積最大的淡水湖。「羅莽湖畔」這首旋律優美的民謠，許多人以為是一首結伴春郊出遊，徜徉湖光山色的景致的情歌。
其實，這首傳唱久遠的蘇格蘭民謠是關於蘇格蘭歷史上一段慘烈的歷史。
1945年，以蘇格蘭高地(Highlands)氏族為主的Jacobite黨人，第二度大規模起義反抗倫敦朝廷。經過幾回征戰，起初蘇格蘭的軍隊一度還打到距倫敦只有一百三十多哩的Derby，京城倫敦為之震動。
但Jacobites黨人最後於翌年1946年4月16日 在蘇格蘭Culloden一地的決定性一役中慘遭殲滅，歷時逾半世紀的Jacobite黨人反抗運動也因此畫下句點。
在這場戰役中，英軍俘擄了許多蘇格蘭人，把他們囚禁在卡萊爾(Carlisle位於英格蘭西北部湖區以北，鄰近蘇格蘭邊界)城堡。不知為何，英格蘭人對待這些蘇格蘭戰俘沒有一定懲處的標準，而是任意挑選一些來吊死、任意挑選一些來釋放。一旦獲釋的幸運者，必需靠雙腿跋山涉水自行回到蘇格蘭。
據說，蘇格蘭戰俘中有一人預感自己將被處決，便寫了Loch Lomond這首歌，託給一位他認為將會被釋放的牢友，帶回去給他住在羅莽湖畔的愛人。說他即將”take the low road”，所謂”low road”就是靈魂到陰間必須通過的道路，而他再也無法在魂牽夢縈那家鄉的羅莽湖畔，見到自己的愛人。
這首哀思悲愴，悱惻怨悼的歌謠就這樣天長地久有時盡，此情綿綿無絶期的留傳至今。

在那美麗、美麗的羅莽湖上。
